LONG LIFE ALUTEC SYSTEMS REVIVE SCHOOLAs part of a major refurbishment project, Hornsea School and Language College has had aluminium rainwater and eaves system replacements installed from Alutec that have a life expectancy as long as the building itself.

Built in the 1950’s, Hornsea School and Language College in Eastgate, Hornsea was in need of extensive external refurbishment in order to bring the school up to modern thermal efficiency standards, address building defects and improve its aesthetics. Initiated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council Infrastructure and Facilities and overseen by Hall Construction, the eight-month refurbishment project included the replacement of rainwater and eaves systems along its flat roofline that are guaranteed to last the entire 40 year estimated life span of the building.

Paul Bentley, Assistant Principal Building Surveyor at East Riding of Yorkshire Council Infrastructure and Facilities, commented: “Central to the ethos behind the refurbishment was the aim to see the building through to the end of its service life. Alutec’s aluminium products were perfect for this brief because of their long life span and zero maintenance requirements, meaning the rainwater and eaves systems should easily see out the building’s service life.”

Installed at the site were Alutec’s Evoke fascia and soffit system in the white RAL 9010 colour and Evolve Deepflow guttering in the unique Heritage Black colour. Made from marine grade aluminium, the guttering has superb performance and sustainability credentials with a life expectancy of 50 years. What’s more, this impressive life span is virtually maintenance free. The systems installed also have a flow performance rating of 4.9 litres per second, ensuring they can cope with the heaviest of water run off.

Paul continued: “Because of the limited lifespan of the building, sustainability was high on the agenda and we wanted to make sure that whatever materials we used could be easily recycled. Aluminium then was the ideal solution and was used for the replacement windows as well as the rainwater systems providing an eco friendly and complimentary solution.”

It is estimated that 75 per cent of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today due to its ability to be recycled over and over without losing its quality, making it one of the most sustainable building materials available.

Paul added: “Alutec and its products have been a key component of the refurbishment at the school. Not only did Alutec help us at the design stage of the project but its products have created the modern, clean finish we were hoping to achieve to bring the building into the 21st century.”

Roy Wilson, Contracts Manager at Hall Construction, concluded: “Working with Alutec has been straightforward with the guttering and downpipes going up without a problem. The aluminium looks great, and because of its resistance to corrosion, will continue to do so for its entire life span.”
