Taking advantage of the contemporary lines of Marley Alutec’s composite aluminium Evoke fascia and soffit system and Aligator Boxer guttering, a unique renovation and self build project in Kent has blended modern style and technologies with traditional architecture.
The first phase of the project involved the complete renovation of an old Methodist Chapel located on the site in Goudhurst, Kent, while the second has seen an ambitious new build take shape called Chapel View. Nick Leggett, a chartered surveyor and Partner of NDL Consulting, and his business and life partner Sonja Johnson took on the project with the view of creating two properties that complimented each other, whilst both having their own distinct style.
Started in September 2013, Chapel View is a 2,000 square foot dwelling and was built using an insulated concrete formwork (ICF) system. Sitting partly below ground with 600 tonnes of earth having been removed from the site, the property hunkers down into its surroundings. The three-storey contemporary home enjoys stunning views and impressive eco-credentials, with no heating required and sustainable materials used throughout.
Nick commented: “When starting the project we were after a real mixture of traditional and modern materials; of natural surfaces and clean lines. After seeing Marley Alutec’s Evoke fascia and soffit and Aligator Boxer ranges at a recent trade show I knew it was the perfect fit for this project as its square box sections provided the contemporary detail I wanted. I also wanted the rainwater systems to match the fenestration so the fact that the Evoke range is available in the same RAL 7016 dark grey colour was a real selling point.
“In addition to fitting in with the building aesthetically, it was important to me that the chosen systems will perform well for the foreseeable future. The life expectancy of Marley Alutec’s products far exceeds that of plastic or timber systems, while the minimal maintenance needs of the system are very impressive and make it a solid investment for the on-going performance of the building envelope.”
Marley Alutec’s Evoke range is made from a recycled polyethylene core with an aluminium outer layer, making it both extremely light and very strong – despite being only 4mm thick. What’s more, the range boasts excellent performance and sustainability credentials, having a virtually maintenance free life expectancy of 50 years or more.
The entire system is fully recyclable making it one of the most sustainable ranges available in the UK. In addition, the manufacture of aluminium composite board uses approximately 75 per cent less energy than that needed to manufacture the equivalent volume in solid aluminium sheet.
Marley Alutec’s Aligator range offers the same long life expectancy as the Evoke range and is made from marine grade aluminium, which is impervious to corrosion.
“Central to the design of our new home was our desire to build responsibly and efficiently. The sustainability of Marley Alutec’s products and the thermal efficiency of our exterior envelope using the ICF system, were key factors in helping us to build in this way and I would highly recommend them to other self builders,” continued Nick. “I am thoroughly pleased with the finished look of the eaves system and confident that it will last for many years to come.”
